Umami Truffle Dogs is your ultimate resource if you suspect you have wild Oregon culinary truffles on your property, want to confirm their presence, and determine the quantity of truffles available.
Our truffle surveys and harvesting techniques are minimally invasive and truffle-friendly. Our handlers and dogs are trained, experienced, and respectful of your property. Your land will be left in the same pristine condition in which we found it — whether we find and harvest truffles or not. And, of course, your privacy is assured.
Our process for determining whether a particular site contains Oregon wild truffles begins with making sure your forested land appears suitable. Your property should be heavily wooded with pure stands of Douglas fir trees. The understory should be fairly open, absent of significant brush or limbs. There should be a thick layer of needles/duff on the ground, and few other plants, with the exception of sword ferns and mosses. The trees should be fairly dense and the above canopy should be enclosed, not allowing much sunlight to shine through.
If your property matches our criteria, and your site is at least an acre or more, then please submit your information using this form. Unfortunately, due to demand, we generally don’t survey smaller tracts.
We charge a $50 fee to evaluate your property using various computer-based research sites, along with the information you provide, using this form. We require your payment, sent via PayPal, before completing the evaluation.
If your site fits our general requirements (e.g., sufficient acreage of pure stands of Douglas fir trees present, age of trees, absence of competing understory plants), and our research leads us to believe your site is appropriate truffle habitat, we will apply the $50 towards your survey fee and discuss scheduling an appointment to come out with a dog team to find your truffles.
Truffle Harvesting Services
Due to demand for our services, we are unable to harvest all properties with truffles on them. If we confirm the presence of truffles on your property, we can consult with you and discuss the various options for having your truffles harvested. We do not offer truffle dog training as a service, but we work with a few exceptional and professional dog trainers and are happy to refer you to them.
If your property meets our requirements — including size and location, and quantity of truffles present — Umami Truffle Dogs may offer to sustainably harvest your truffles. Terms can include: an upfront payment to secure harvesting rights; a predetermined fee for harvesting for you; or an offer to purchase the truffles at the time of harvest, based on the quantity gathered.
Physical truffle survey costs begin at $100 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. Survey fees vary with acreage, topography, and travel distance to the property. UTD services are sustainable, earth-and-truffle friendly, and are conducted with complete respect for your property and your privacy — guaranteed. References available upon request.
